How to set a Positive Example Through Family Fitness

I’ve spent over a decade focusing on my health, dedicating myself to building a strong physique through consistent workouts. As a parent, my ultimate goal has always been to be the kind of cool, fit mom that my child looks up to, not just in the context of sports, but in terms of overall physical fitness.

With my child delving into competitive sports, I’ve come to realize that my approach to exercise not only impacts my own well-being but also shapes how my child perceives fitness outside of organized sports. My early morning workout routine, centered around weight training, is a manifestation of my personal goals – from physical strength and muscle definition to mental clarity and self-mastery, all aimed at leading a longer, healthier life.

However, when it comes to involving my child in exercise, I understand the need to make it fun and relatable, steering away from complex explanations about my fitness motivations. Each child reacts differently to such efforts, but here’s what has worked for me in getting my little one involved as a gym buddy:

  1. Lead by Example: By consistently sticking to my workout routine, I’ve noticed that my child naturally becomes curious and eager to join in. Much like wanting to tag along when I head to the bathroom, establishing a regular exercise habit can spark that same desire in children.

  2. Make it Accessible: Inviting your child to participate in your workout can be as simple as leaving the door open to the exercise space or suggesting a walk together. Turning exercise into a game or aligning it with your child’s interests can make it more appealing. For instance, inspired by a zombie-themed cartoon episode, I engaged my son in “Zombie squats” in the garage, and the fun twist instantly caught his attention, leading to an enjoyable workout session for both of us.

  3. Embrace Imperfection: When exercising with your child, remember that it won’t always be flawless or precisely structured. Embrace the spontaneity and the joy of shared physical activity, focusing on building positive associations with fitness rather than perfection.

By involving our families in our fitness journey through engaging and inclusive activities, we not only set a positive example but also foster a deeper bond through shared experiences that prioritize health and well-being. Remember, it’s not just about the exercise itself but the values and memories we create along the way.
