Ever wonder how you can seamlessly juggle all your responsibilities while still feeling like a superhero? The secret sauce lies in one simple word: routines.
It’s funny how new parents go all out in establishing routines for their babies to differentiate day from night and eating patterns. But when it comes to us adults, we often overlook the power of routines in cultivating new habits. It’s time to reclaim your time, energy, and sanity by embracing the magic of daily routines! Let’s dive into the world of structured habits that will propel you towards your best self.
I have always been the type that needs order to sort through the chaos. It’s probably why I landed into a full time career of project management — most of my day is taking complex problems, sorting through the steps to identify what’s missing or what went wrong and then find a solution. Think a “fixer” like Olivia Pope from Scandal. I also really like popcorn and wine so the connection works 🙂
Routines may sound scary. They may sound boring. But we make our children do them and they work!
Here’s the deal — not everything needs a routine but so many of our goals or complaints can be solved by developing one.
Steps to Kickstart Your Journey to a Healthier Lifestyle
When it comes to adults, a common goal is to improve fitness and nutrition while juggling work and shuttling kids to practices. In this post, I aim to provide you with the steps to help you begin making positive changes. Let’s dive in.
Pick a place to start
Often when people try to change their health habits, they try to change everything. I’m here to assure you that starting with one thing is the proven way to make permanent change. How can you possibly pick one thing? Here’s a simple step-by-step to get down to one:
-
Ask yourself the primary goal — lose weight, add muscle, improve overall health, improve endurance, look better, feel better, have more energy, or get stronger are the most commons fitness goals.
-
Ask yourself for the goal above, what specifically would you like to be different — what are you doing now that you want to change the most? If there’s a few things then list the most important one first.
-
What are the things you can control to help you change the things in Step 2?
-
Pick one of the items from Step 3 and think of one thing you can do daily that takes 5 minutes or less that supports that change.
An example of this could be:
-
I want to lose weight.
-
I want to fit better in my clothes; I want to have more energy to exercise.
-
I need eat more vegetables; I need to get more sleep.
-
I will take 5 minutes to prep one or two fresh vegetables I can add to a meal during the day; I will take 5 minutes to read a book in bed before I fall asleep.
Can 5 minutes a day really help me?
Yes! You have to start somewhere and taking one small action that supports the long term goal is an easy, low stress way to move forward. After a week if that feels good, either add in one of the other 5 minute actions you wrote down OR run through the process again to find a new habit you can start.
Building a routine step by step is the key to creating a more balanced and enjoyable life while making progress towards your goals. By establishing reliable structures and consistent habits, you can reduce stress, increase results, and carve out time for the things that truly matter.
The best part — embracing a routine that supports your physical, mental, and emotional well-being sets the foundation for success and fulfillment in all areas of life. Take the first step today towards a more intentional and rewarding lifestyle through the power of a well-crafted routine.
