How to Enjoy the Holidays Without Starting Over in January

The Real Reason Moms Feel Like They Have to “Start Over” Every January

Every December, moms everywhere swear this will be the year they “stay on track”… then the school parties, travel, and peppermint mochas roll in. By January, you’re staring at your gym bag like it betrayed you. But here’s the thing: staying consistent through the holidays isn’t about restriction or perfection. It’s about having a few healthy holiday habits for moms that make life easier, not harder. The goal isn’t to start over, it’s to never stop completely.

Why the Holiday Hustle Makes Healthy Habits Feel Impossible

While it’s crazy schedules all year round (even over the summer) the holidays just bring this extra layer of “am I doing enough?”. It makes it much easier to skip a workout, grab food while you’re out shopping and shuttling between holiday parties, all while stress levels are higher. Pretty much a trifecta for getting off track and feeling like you have to set a mental date to start over.

What if I told you, there are some really basic things you can do to not completely kill your progress and maybe even help keep those stress levels down?

Healthy Holiday Habits for Moms Who Don’t Want to Start from Scratch

There are several habits you can easily keep at during this extra busy season – as long as you truly want to. Here’s a list of healthy holiday habits for moms that you can keep in a note on your phone, set reminders for, whatever works for you to keep them front and center!

  1. Protein at every meal – aim for 20g of protein (think 4oz of a meat, 2 eggs + egg whites)
  2. Move for 20 minutes (even if it’s just dumbbells in the living room)
  3. Drink water before coffee (or any trigger to get you to remember to hydrate)
  4. Keep one non-negotiable (like bedtime or steps)
  5. Ditch the guilt when life isn’t perfect (the hardest most likely most important is to not get down on yourself)

Doing even just 2 of these a day, and those 2 can change day-to-day, will be a huge step forward when you’re ready to get fully back at your routine post-holidays.

How to Actually Enjoy the Season Without Losing Progress

You’re not going to perfect but what truly gets results is consistency. In my 12 years of coaching, the most successful people are the ones that always get something checked off their list. Whether that be subbing a walk around the field during your kids practice if you missed a lifting session, or choosing a grilled chicken sandwich at the drive-thru over a fried one (when that’s what you really wanted). All of those things matter in the end.

Start the New Year Strong (Without the Reset)

You don’t need to “start over” in January. You just need to stop quitting every December. When you hold onto a few simple habits, even when life gets busy, you keep your progress moving forward. It’s not about perfection. It’s about consistency that actually fits your life.
